Monday, August 1st 2011 The Update Core module for Drupal 7.x to automatically download and update the Drupal core installation has been developed. The module is designed to be simple and compliment the Updates Manager module that ships with Drupal until it eventually acquires the long-awaited capability to update the Drupal project itself.
Over the years, while just about every other modern software application has implemented convenient auto-update routines, update functionality for Drupal has languished due to what can only be ascribed to security concerns. These concerns persist for Update Core while it undergoes review pending full project status on Drupal where it's likely to remain indefinitely until it meets their standards. It's open source and other developers are welcome to contribute their free time and talent to meeting this broader set of expectations at their discretion.
However crude, Update Core emulates and automates downloading the latest Drupal project archive from drupal.org and extracting the new files overwriting the old files at the Drupal-powered website the module is installed to with a click of the mouse. That's it.
